Driving lessons for overconfident learner drivers

Warren Davis

For some parents their biggest issue when letting their new learner driver on the road is not a lack of skills, but an excess of confidence relative to their chid's experience in driving. Here are some ways that you can get your child to take driving more seriously and become less cocky on the road.

Get them professional driving lessons

Many children practise driving skills and aggressive driving in crazy situations, which can give them an inflated idea of how well they can deal with hazards on the roads. It can be a great idea to give them a set of driving lessons with a professional driving instructor that can construct some practical yet challenging situations that the driver may need to deal with; including braking suddenly on an innercity road involve multiple pedestrian and other vehicle obstructions, driving through a flooded road in an 'aquaplaning situation' or driving at night while dealing kangaroos and other fauna. These more realistic situations can actually be a lot more challenging to deal with, particularly as the drivers cannot 'reload' when they are driving a real car unlike in a video game!

Get them to speak to car crash victims

There are a range of road safety organisations that organise talks from young drivers who have been in car accidents. These can be very moving and often bring home the story of the drivers involved in car crashes which can be very meaningful when your young driver can relate to them. It can also be an important way to show them that a car crash can affect a lot more people that the driver, including any other passengers or pedestrians and the extended family of anyone in the crash. Often for a serious crash a wide network of people be affected for many years to come. They can also often get to view pictures of an actual car crash,  rather than the stylised images that they may be more used to seeing in video games.

If you are looking to help make sure your child is safe when they hit the road as an independent driver it is important to make sure that they have a realistic image of their skills as a driver. There are some simple ways to do this including getting them some defensive driving lessons from a professional driving instructor and getting them to listen to a talk from a car crash victim.

About Me
It is Never too Late to Learn New Skills

Hello, and welcome to my new education and development blog. My name is Chris, and today I would like to tell you my story. At the age of 40, I was ready to give up on life. Although I had done really well at University and had a good career in the banking sector, I just wasn't happy. One day, my wife suggested that I pack it all in and start out in a new direction. She put me in touch with the local education and development school and they really helped me. I retrained as an engineer and I have never been happier. I hope you enjoy my blog.
