How to Package Infectious Substances

Warren Davis

It may be necessary to transport infectious substances, such as pathogen cultures, from one location to another. Appropriate measures must be taken when packaging those materials to ensure that they will not pose any health or safety risk during their transportation. This article discusses some of the requirements that you may have to fulfil when packaging infectious substances.

Triple Packaging

One way to ensure that the infectious substances will not pose any danger during their shipment is by placing them in triple packaging. The primary packaging, such as a plastic tube, should be watertight and leak-proof. The secondary receptacle into which the primary receptacle is placed should also be watertight and leak-proof. It may also be necessary to use absorbent padding between the primary and the secondary packaging. The third packaging material should be rigid so that it provides ample protection to the receptacles inside it.

Acceptable Quantities

Another way by which the risk profile of infectious substances can be regulated is by placing limits on the quantities that can be transported in each primary receptacle. The acceptable quantities are normally lower if the substances are going to be transported using the same means as humans. For example, the quantities that are allowed on planes carrying passengers are likely to be lower than what can be carried on a cargo plane. You therefore need to know how the substances will be transported so that you package them accordingly.

Substance Name and Number

You should also know the appropriate label to place on the outer packaging of the infectious substances. For instance, infectious substances have different labels based on whether those substances are infectious to animals or human beings. Those different substances normally have a shipping number assigned to them by the United Nations. The appropriate UN number should be visible on the packaging.

Orientation Markings

One is also required to place package orientation marks on the outer packaging if the infectious substance that is being shipped is in liquid form. There are specific guidelines that have to be followed when using those markings. For instance, the markings should be either red or black. They should also be on the opposite sides to the sides on which the hazard class labels have been placed.

Many categories of dangerous substances exist. Each of those categories may have its own set of packaging or shipping guidelines. The best way to avoid contravening any applicable laws is by enrolling for a dangerous goods course so that you can be equipped with all the necessary information and skills for handling those substances.

It is Never too Late to Learn New Skills

Hello, and welcome to my new education and development blog. My name is Chris, and today I would like to tell you my story. At the age of 40, I was ready to give up on life. Although I had done really well at University and had a good career in the banking sector, I just wasn't happy. One day, my wife suggested that I pack it all in and start out in a new direction. She put me in touch with the local education and development school and they really helped me. I retrained as an engineer and I have never been happier. I hope you enjoy my blog.
